Social Impact
Our commitment to fair trade practices:
We are dedicated to upholding social responsibility by partnering with suppliers who commit to Fair Trade principles and ethical practices.
Our suppliers adhere to the 10 principles set by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and are accredited as a full member of the Bangladesh Fair Trade Forum (ECOTA) and a Guaranteed Member of the WFTO since July 2017. They are committed to rigorous external assessments to ensure compliance with best practices.
Jibana is proud to represent a supplier that employs around 150 people from rural Bangladesh, prioritising fair and ethical employment that aligns with the global Fair Trade standards. Our supplier also adheres to paying fair prices to farmers for the materials.
Fair and ethical employment doesn’t just change the life of the person employed, it has a positive ripple effect that touches their family and community too. See the story of one of our supplier’s employees, Salma, sharing how fair employment has impacted her life for the better!
A Story of Impact: Salma’s Journey
Salma (name changed) lives in a small village in Bangladesh. With a husband working irregularly as an agricultural labourer, and facing multiple hardships including the loss of her only daughter and severe health issues in her children, Salma's family struggled for years. Previously working as a housemaid with insufficient wages, her family lived in a basic bamboo hut that was often damaged during monsoon storms.
In 2009, Salma joined (our supplier) as a Tailor, where she stitched (casket) linings. Her skills, honed during her treatment at the Leprosy Mission Hospital, allowed her to save and eventually secure a small loan to purchase land. She has since built a stable home and is working towards acquiring more land for her husband’s farming.
With newfound stability, Salma’s children have been able to attend school, and she has expanded her skills in (casket) manufacturing. Her story exemplifies the positive, life-changing impact of fair employment practices and the difference that they make in the lives of individuals and their communities.
